Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ironically led to more European countries looking at adopting nuclear for energy security. Europe currently imports 60% of its energy needs. Prior to the Ukraine crisis, European countries have started to recognise the role which nuclear energy can play in achieving net zero and combating climate change. The need to transition to a low-carbon and sustainable energy adoption coupled with the urgency to achieve energy independence has led to a revival in interest for nuclear energy on the continent. NBP spoke with George Borovas, Head of Nuclear from Hunton Andrews Kurth on the future of nuclear energy in Europe.

In this episode, we look at the regulatory aspects of Turkey’s emerging nuclear energy program and speak with Mr. Anıl Bölme, Licensing Group Leader (Sinop NPP) from the Nuclear Regulatory Authority of Turkey (NDK). Anıl shared first-hand insights on the licensing procedure for the current Akkuyu NPP and licensing procedures for the second and third nuclear power programs in Turkey.
