Türkiye Plans For More Nuclear

From construction nation to nuclear operating nation — with a 20 GW pipeline that is already in motion.

Türkiye has crossed a threshold. With Akkuyu NPP's first unit entering commercial operation in 2026 — marking the country's debut as a nuclear energy nation — attention has already shifted to what comes next.

Two further large-scale projects are in active development: Sinop NPP (4.8 GW) on the Black Sea coast, where a US–South Korea trilateral negotiation framework is now in place, and Thrace NPP (5.6 GW), the largest single nuclear investment opportunity currently in the global pipeline.

Alongside these, a formal 5 GW SMR programme has been committed. Türkiye's target is 20 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050 and net zero by 2053 — a goal that makes nuclear not a policy preference, but an economic necessity.

Entering the Turkish Nuclear Market

Türkiye is embarking on a nuclear power programme and is planning to install three NPPs (Akkuyu NPP, Sinop NPP, Ignaeda NPP, which will include 12 nuclear power reactor units. The first unit of Akkuyu NPP will be in operation by the end of 2025 and the rest of units operational by 2028. The Sinop and Ignaeda NPP is targeted to be operational by 2035.

In November 2022, Deputy Energy and Natural Resources Minister Dr. Alparslan Bayraktar highlighted that the country needed at least 16 to 20 reactors, according to initial estimates, or 12 to 16 reactors in addition to the Akkuyu NPP to be a carbon-neutral economy by the turn of the century.
